IDEA: Neon portals and ladders of light in acoustic drums.
WHAT: While these works pick up on the minimalists’ reduction to simple geometric structures, serial reproduction, and the use of industrially produced music instruments, it imbues these elements with social references. Alluded to great American minimal and concept artists such as Dan Flavin or Dan Graham, an integral aspect of this works is the references to recent Chilean history: the military junta of Augusto Pinochet. The light flowing through his sculptures and mirror works can be read both as a metaphor for enlightenment and as one for economic and political power wielded in democratic and totalitarian systems to regulate and control all kinds of energies, be they financial, electricity, goods, or information. The drum sculptures were used in a collaboration with TV On The Radio front-man Tunde Adebimpe and Bart Higgins (Emergency Party), who teamed up with Iván Navarro and Courtney Smith in the creation of the unique experience of OÍDO: An Experiment in Sound and Sculpture. WHY: Many of Navarro’s objects subtly convey the violence coupled with advancements of the modern age, during which human rights and humanity have fallen victim to ideology and economic pursuits.

Navarro and Smith built an ensemble of several sculpture works that were wired with microphones and effects to be used as one-of-a-kind instruments for a live performance featuring Adebimpe & Higgins: the result was a multi-fronted improvisational show with voice and percussion played on strangely lit mirror-works and gorgeous quasi-furniture. Recorded live at the Saints Peter & Paul Theater in Brooklyn, NY, all proceeds from its sales will benefit Brooklyn’s Public School #84. Published by HR in a vinyl edition of 100 copies and a CD edition of 500 copies. The CD includes a bonus track and video of the live performance. Order a recording of this live performance here.
